Our Grade 2 students are discovering that caring for others is about more than simply learning about kindness; it is about finding ways to put compassion into action.
As part of their service learning this year, the class recently visited the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada. During their visit, students heard the stories of the donkeys who have found a safe and caring home at the sanctuary and learned about the ways they are looked after.
The visit gave our students an opportunity to think beyond the donkeys themselves. Together, they began making connections between animals who have experienced displacement or neglect and people who may also experience displacement, loneliness or a lack of care. These conversations are helping our students develop empathy and recognize the importance of creating safe, welcoming spaces for others.
Their learning will continue as the class sponsors a donkey of their own. Students will have the opportunity to learn more about their donkey and write encouraging letters, putting into practice the care and compassion they have been learning about.
The Grade 2s will also embark on a hands-on service project with Hope House. Throughout the year as a class, they will package toilet paper to help provide a practical item to people in our community who are experiencing difficult circumstances.
Through these experiences, our Grade 2 students are learning that service doesn’t always have to be something big. Sometimes, it looks like listening to a story, noticing someone who needs care, writing an encouraging letter or meeting a simple, practical need.
We are so proud of the way our students are learning to look beyond themselves and ask, “How can I help?” We pray these small acts of service will continue to shape their hearts and help them reflect Christ’s love to those around them.
