Battle Of The Books!

What is the Battle of the Books?
Battle of the books (B.O.B. for short) is a way for students to read and have a friendly competition all together. There is a junior (grades 4 – 6 ) and senior team (grades 7 and 8), each team has 8 different books that they have to read as much as possible in the span from September to April usually.
And in April there will be a competition against other christian schools in Kitchener on who knows the book best based on a series of questions.

What are the books?
The B.O.B. Books change every year, Which is great so you don’t have to read the same books every year.

This year the junior B.O.B. books are: Snow Treasure – Marie McSwigan, The Warriors – Joseph Bruchac, Ruby Holler – Sharron Creech, Chasing Vermeer – Blue Balliett, Pictures of Hollis Woods – Patricia Reilly Giff, The Bridge Home – Padma Venkatraman, The Horse and His Boy – C.S. Lewis, and Out of My Mind – Sharon Draper.

The senior books include: Wednesday Wars – Gary Schmidt, The Art of Keeping Cool – Janet Taylor Lisle, Thunder Over Kandahar – Sharon E Mckay, The Apothecary – Maile Meloy, Fly Away – Lucy Christopher, The False Prince – Jennifer Neilson, Other Words for Home – Jasmine Warga, The Last Mapmaker – Christina Soontornvat.

How do you Start Battle of the Books?
You can start reading in September, but the sign up sheet is up by November, and the club meetings begin in January, So the club meetings are from January to April .The club meetings are weekly lunch time meetings in the link or sometimes the library.
The teacher that will be leading B.O.B. is Guelph Community Christian School’s very own Mrs. Stronks, So if you have any questions or thoughts ask Mrs. Stronks.

What do We do in a B.O.B. Meeting?
When you are in a B.O.B. Every week a different book will be talked about and you will practice doing some questions that might be in the competition.
When you have gone through all the books you start to do practice competitions. This means that the group you are in will be split in half and told to go against each other answering questions. All of this will be directed by Mrs. Stronks.

How does the Competition Work?
On Thursday, April 11th, 2024 multiple teams from different christian schools will go up against each other in different rooms one by one. They will answer questions related to the books they have read over the last couple months, you will take turns with the other team answering questions, but if your team gets the question wrong the other team can steal it. your team captain will be the one saying to answer. After a slow question round, we move to a lightning round where you answer questions as quickly as possible in one minute. If you don’t know the answer to a question you can skip it, but eventually after you’ve gone through all the questions on the list they will go over the questions you passed and see if you can answer them.

I hope you enjoyed reading my newsletter on B.O.B.. It’s an enjoyable experience so if you like reading with friends and your competitive join, because you’ll never know if you don’t try.
