Principal’s Ponderings: Beginning As We Mean to Go On

Twenty years ago I began what turned into two years of living and teaching in London, England. During those years I often heard the phrase used, “Begin as you mean to go on.” The phrase was a part of a longer quote from prominent English preacher, Charles H. Spurgeon, “Begin as you mean to go on and let the Lord be all in all to you.” Although on this side of the Atlantic Ocean I’ve not heard this quote used, I have continued to reflect on the phrase and its meaning. Although, there are probably multiple meanings, for me the clearest is to be intentional to begin something in the way and spirit that we hope to continue with it. The beginning of this new school year prompted my reflection on this quote again as we began it together in chapel-praising God, thanking Him for this new school year, and placing it in His hands of care. Beginning this way, is how we hope to continue – together, praising God and thanking Him and continuing to put our trust in Him. We had a great first week and we look forward to the weeks and months ahead – to letting the Lord be all in all in us and to continue what we have begun!
