Transportation is an important part of school life at GCCS. Many members rely on the bus to transport their children to and from school. The GCCS Board also recognizes the important role transportation can play in a family’s decision to choose GCCS for their children; therefore, a significant portion of the cost of bussing is covered through the budget.
In order to provide better service for the families of GCCS, bus service is coordinated with Woodland Christian High School (WCHS).
A ‘buddy system’ is in place for students in Junior Kindergarten through grade 3 who are new to riding the bus. These students are paired up with a senior student for the first few weeks of school or as long as is necessary. There is no additional fee for the ‘buddy system’.
The monthly fees for September to June bus transportation are published in August.
Bus routes are determined in August. Once routes are established, each family will be contacted with their specific pick up/drop off times/locations.
Students riding the bus must obey the bus driver at all times for the safety of everyone. The school’s code of conduct also applies to the bus. Parents whose children cannot safely, or obediently, ride on the bus may be asked to pay for a bus sitter, or to remove their child(ren) from the bus.
Bus students may only be picked up or dropped off at their designated stops. Guest passengers are discouraged.
HEALTHY for kids – All menus comply with the Ontario Ministry of Education’s Food and Beverage Policy, PPM 150.·
BENEFICIAL for schools – Lunches are delivered to the school organized by classroom and labeled with the student’s name, teacher/grade, and order details.
EASY for Parents – The ordering deadline for parents is Sunday at noon for the following week. Parents may order weekly or in advance based on their choice.
The Ministry of Education allows up to one hour’s absence per week for private instruction in music. We do provide space for private music lessons at school.
We can provide the contact information of these music teachers to parents to make arrangements for these lessons.
The cost is the sole responsibility of the parent. The school expects that the parents will consult with the classroom teacher about the best time for private lessons, and that the parents and student will accept full responsibility for any work that is missed.
GCCS is governed by the John Calvin Christian School Society, which consists of parents, grandparents, alumni and other interested community members, all of whom share our vision of Christian education.
New families who agree with the core values and vision of the Society are encouraged to join and take part in the governance and management of the school.
The membership in the Society is primarily comprised of current parents, former parents, former students, and other interested supporters.
Membership in the Society is not required to enroll at GCCS, nor is it automatic upon enrollment of one’s children. However, we encourage all parents who support the Christian mission and vision of the school to consider becoming Society members. Membership entitles members to participate and vote in the Spring and Fall General Business Meetings, at which some of the key decisions about school affairs are made. In addition, Society membership is required to be a member of the Board of Directors and to serve on most committees.
The main requirement for joining the Society is agreement with a statement of faith that encapsulates the Christian foundations of GCCS. Becoming a member in the Society requires an interview with the Membership Committee (standing committee of the Board). During the first year of enrolment, all parents will be contacted by the Membership Committee and asked if they would consider being interviewed. Prospective members will be asked about their personal faith commitment and practices as a means of determining if they will be able to support, preserve, and promote the faith-based foundation of the Society and of the school. Parents may accept or decline the invitation.
After the interview, the parents will be notified in writing if they have been accepted into membership. There is a membership fee of $25 per parent/member per year. This fee will be receipted for charitable tax deduction purposes.
