At the core of our teaching: to nurture, educate and inspire
When students are immersed in this wonderful, true story, they begin to understand who they are, where they have come from, and what their lives are all about.
GCCS students start learning and speaking French in Grade 1 using repeated oral practice as the primary method of developing proficiency.
Twice a year, students at GCCS take tests called Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP®).
Students are provided with opportunities to assess and extend their learning in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).
In the classroom we view technology as one of many tools in the toolbox for both teachers and students.
Including After School Care, Student Support Services, School Clubs and Music Lessons.
Being in early adolescence, graduating students will still face many choices and challenges ahead; however, we would hope to see tendencies towards Christ-like attributes, such as:
Our educational goal is to educate knowledgeable and competent disciples. We attempt to reach this goal by respecting traditional educational methods which have served our society well, while also implementing modifications in response to social change, well-tested research findings and our teaching philosophy.
Students at GCCS are evaluated on a regular basis using regular classroom assignments, periodic tests, and observations, as well MAP (Measures of Academic Progress). MAP is personalized assessment experience that measures individual growth and progress for our students.
The school also assesses the effectiveness of its program by participating in math contests sponsored by universities, and in science fairs and speech contests sponsored by local organizations. We also monitor how our graduates do in high school by talking with the students themselves and with high school personnel. The results of student evaluations are provided to the parents through newsletters, report cards, and parent-teacher conferences.
Our students go on field trips to arts and sporting events as well as other fascinating locations like the African Lion Safari. We also take our students to local charities to work in service projects to help our Guelph community. Most of the field trip expenses are met with funds raised by students in events like the Skate-a-thon. If there are additional expenses and a family finds them a hardship, the family is encouraged to talk to the teacher or principal.
Parents are often asked to participate in field trips by chaperoning. This lightens the teacher's load and allows some positive interaction between parents and their children. We walk to local destinations and usually take a bus on field trips to more distant locations.
GCCS provides a Special Education Resource Program through the work of our Special Education Resource Teachers (SERTS) and CCAC-funded access to occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech pathology support. Our SERTS support a variety of learners as we implement a vision of inclusive Christian Education.
GCCS’s teaching philosophy is founded on Christian beliefs such as:
