At GCCS we love to encourage our students to explore new challenges, especially when it comes to mathematics. One exciting opportunity for our students in Grades 7 and 8 is the Gauss Mathematics Contest, an annual event held every May that many parents may not yet know about.
What Is the Gauss Contest?
The Gauss Contest, organized by the University of Waterloo’s Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC), is designed to give students a chance to engage with math beyond the classroom curriculum. It focuses on problem-solving, logical thinking, and creative reasoning, rather than memorization or rote learning.
At GCCS, we see the contest as a way for students to grow in confidence, stretch their thinking, and enjoy mathematics in a supportive and fun environment.
How the Contest Works at GCCS
The contest is held during the school day and typically looks like this:
- 25 multiple-choice questions covering a range of math skills
- 60 minutes to complete
- Questions increase in difficulty, starting with confidence-building problems and ending with more challenging puzzles that encourage creative thinking
- Students complete the contest individually, giving everyone the chance to showcase their own problem-solving abilities
Why GCCS Students Participate
At GCCS, our students enjoy participating in the Gauss Contest because it:
- Encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Helps students experience math as a creative challenge, not just a set of rules
- Builds confidence in approaching new and unfamiliar problems
- Celebrates individual effort and growth in a friendly, non-competitive way
Recognizing Achievement
Every student who participates receives a Certificate of Participation. Additionally, students who excel may receive:
- Certificates of Distinction for scoring in the top 25% at the school level
- Outstanding Achievement Certificates for the highest-performing Grade 7 and Grade 8 students
These awards are a wonderful way to celebrate perseverance, creativity, and curiosity in mathematics.
Supporting a Love of Learning
The Gauss Contest is more than a test—it’s an opportunity for GCCS students to see math in a new light, explore problem-solving strategies, and discover the joy of tackling a challenge. Participating in contests like Gauss helps our students develop skills that will benefit them in all areas of learning, while also having fun with numbers, patterns, and logic.
At GCCS, we are proud to see our students embracing challenges like the Gauss Contest and growing as confident, creative thinkers who love to learn.
