I shared the following quote with the members of the staff as a “Point to Ponder” in a weekly memo recently.
“Live your life each day as you would climb a mountain. An occasional glance toward the summit keeps the goal in mind, but many beautiful scenes are to be observed from each new vantage point. Climb slowly, steadily, enjoying each passing moment; and the view from the summit will serve as a fitting climax for the journey.”
The quote, attributed to Harold V. Melchert, encourages us to live life with both a purpose and plan while also enjoying the scenery along the way.
While the quote doesn’t seem to have any deeper meaning than that, I think it can be extended to reveal some truths about our journey of faith.
As Christians we know that eternity with God is our ultimate destination – the top of the mountain – and yet while we move towards that we should not be so focused on it that we miss all that is around us along the way. God’s spirit is at work in the here and now and he invites us to both witness and testify to the beauty of that from each new vantage point.
Our walk as Christians isn’t always easy – it can feel very much like going uphill, and it requires perseverance. And yet, we are not called to scurry around aimlessly or recklessly but rather to faithfully follow the path laid out for us. And while eternity will certainly be the climax of our journey, we are invited to make the most of each passing moment along the way.
